«Writing about sound is like dancing about architecture.»
This famous aphorism by Martin Mull is perfect to introduce a festival like Il Suono in Mostra. An exhibition of Sound Art should first be heard. With ears.
But though it may seem obvious, you can not conceive sound without space, and in this exhibition space, understood as architecture, environment, such as vacuum that is filled (with sound) plays a very important role.
Ten places in Udine chosen for their beauty or their acoustic characteristics are the theater for the sound installations of twelve artists (or groups of artists) from around the world who have been invited to exhibit here.
The main concept of the festival is to combine the opportunity of visiting buildings which are significant for their architecture, with a sensitive exploration of these places through listening.
The works in program aren’t typical concerts, they are instead offered to the public as a piece of sculpture or a photograph, that is, in accordance with the usual practices of the art galleries, that they are “exhibited.” There is no beginning or end, simply you can stop and listen as long as you desire, just like in front of a painting or a sculpture.
The sound in this case is not the same as the one meant in traditional musical language, played in concert halls or entertainment music. Here the sound is used as a material element, concrete, almost tangible.
At our head office, in Viale Volontari della Libertà at number 43, you are invited to ask anything we were not able to tell here.
