Un’immersione sonora tra le onde e sotto le onde. Un’esplorazione in apnea tra le sfumature del contrastante rapporto tra l’uomo e le altre forme di vita che abitano il mare.
I suoni subacquei del Nord Adriatico, registrati per scopi scientifici nell’ambito del Progetto Europeo “Soundscape”, sono stati utilizzati per questa composizione dedicata all’interazione tra i linguaggi degli abitanti marini nel loro habitat con i rumori prodotti dall’uomo.
La composizione si articola in tre sezioni di lungo respiro. Le prime due espongono i contenuti sonori più significativi delle centinaia di ore di registrazione raccolte dagli idrofoni collocati a qualche metro di profondità al largo di Rimini e di Venezia. Nella prima parte predomina il mondo naturale, con i canti e i versi dei delfini e degli abitanti del mare. Nella seconda si possono ascoltare i rumori prodotti da barche e pescherecci con cui gli animali si trovano oggi a dover convivere. La terza sezione, più interpretativa prende spunto dalle prime due e, nel rivelare la “musicalità” dei suoni del mondo subacqueo, gioca con essi inserendo nella tessitura suoni strumentali ed elettronici.
I tempi della composizione sono dilatati – ogni sezione dura circa un’ora – perché il mondo che vi è rappresentato eccede le normali temporalità che solitamente si dedicano ad una mostra. Il tema trattato – il paesaggio sonoro sottomarino – segue una differente scala di fenomeni e l’ascoltatore-visitatore è invitato a frequentare l’installazione in orari diversi della giornata.
Per richiamare la dimensione dell’ascolto subacqueo, la composizione è diffusa su due livelli, uno all’altezza del suolo, ove trovano spazio i suoni del fondo marino, e uno più alto da dove si diffondono i suoni provenienti dalla superficie.
Different Waves è un invito al rispetto alla meraviglia del paesaggio sonoro acquatico e alla sensibilizzazione per le sfide ecologiche che oggi tutti dobbiamo e possiamo affrontare.
IL PROGETTO SOUNDSCAPE
Il Mare Adriatico settentrionale è un’area fortemente colpita dall’aumento del traffico marittimo, del turismo e dello sfruttamento delle risorse, pur avendo una biodiversità molto vulnerabile. Il progetto SOUNDSCAPE è una cooperazione tecnica, scientifica e istituzionale tra Italia e Croazia per affrontare l’impatto del rumore ambientale sottomarino sulla fauna marina e in generale sull’ecosistema del nord Adriatico. Obiettivo del progetto è garantire un’efficace protezione della biodiversità marina e lo sviluppo di un utilizzo sostenibile delle risorse marine e costiere.

Ground-to-Sea Sound Collective è stato fondato a Rimini nel 2013 dal musicista Fabio Mina, dal musicista-ricercatore Emiliano Battistini e dal videomaker-musicista Luca Mina, col supporto di GA/ER (Giovani Artisti Emilia Romagna).
Il collettivo ha una poetica marcatamente site-specific, i loro concerti sono concepiti a partire dall’esplorazione delle caratteristiche sonore ed acustiche del luogo e dalla raccolta dei suoni del paesaggio che diventano “l’ensemble” con cui interagiscono dal vivo. La registrazione ambientale rappresenta il pretesto e l’ossatura del processo compositivo e delle loro improvvisazioni. Allo stesso tempo ogni raccolta di registrazioni effettuate sul campo produce un archivio sonoro che essi utilizzano per installazioni, lezioni, conferenze, film, album discografici.
Unendo interessi di ambito naturalistico ed ecologico e la valorizzazione di culture e di musiche tradizionali, Ground-to-Sea prende come prima ispirazione il mare e ciò che lo circonda. Onde sonore come onde marine per unire terre vicine e lontane.

The underwater sounds of the North Adriatic, recorded for scientific purposes as part of the European “Soundscape” project, were used for this soundscape composition dedicated to the interaction between the languages of marine inhabitants in their habitat with the noises produced by men.
The composition is divided into three sections. The first two exhibit the most significant sound content of the hundreds of hours of recording collected by hydrophones located a few meters deep off the coast of Rimini and Venice. In the first part the natural world predominates, with the songs and verses of the dolphins and the inhabitants of the sea. In the second you can hear the noises produced by boats and fishing boats with which the animals nowadays have to live together. The third section, more interpretative, takes its cue from the first two and, in revealing the “musicality” of the underwater world, plays with them by inserting instrumental and electronic sounds into the texture.
The timing of the composition is extended – each section lasts about an hour – because the world represented there exceeds the temporalities that are usually dedicated to an exhibition. The subject matter – the underwater soundscape – follows a different scale of phenomena and the visitor is invited to attend the installation at different times of the day.
To recall the dimension of underwater listening, the composition is spread over two levels, one at ground level, with the sounds of the seabed, and a higher one for the sounds of the surface.
Different Waves is an invitation to respect the wonder of the aquatic soundscape and to raise awareness of the ecological challenges that we all have and can face today.
THE SOUNDSCAPE EU PROJECT
The Northern Adriatic Sea (NAS) is an area highly impacted by increasing maritime traffic, tourism and resource exploitation, whilst having a very vulnerable biodiversity. The main objective of the project is to create a cross-border technical, scientific and institutional cooperation to face together the challenge of assessing the impact of underwater environmental noise on the marine fauna and in general on the NAS ecosystem. This cooperation aims to ensure an efficient protection of marine biodiversity and to develop a sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems and resources. The objectives of the project are to be pursued in three ways: Implementing a shared monitoring network for a coordinated regional and transnational assessment of the underwater noise, evaluating the noise impact on marine biological resources, developing and implementing a planning tool for straightforward management.

Ground-to-Sea Sound Collective was founded in Rimini in 2013 by the musician Fabio Mina, the musician-researcher Emiliano Battistini and the videomaker-musician Luca Mina, with the support of GA / ER (Young Artists Emilia Romagna).
The collective has a markedly site-specific poetics, their concerts are conceived starting from the exploration of the sounds and the acoustic characteristics of a given place and from the collection of the sounds of the landscape that become “the ensemble” with which they interact on stage. The environmental recording represents the pretext and the fulcrum of their compositional process and their improvisations. At the same time each collection of recordings produces a sound archive which they use for installations, lectures, conferences, films, and record albums.
Combining naturalistic and ecological interests and the enhancement of traditional cultures and music, Ground-to-Sea takes the sea and its surroundings as its first inspiration. Sound waves like sea waves to unify near and far lands.
